PlayStation 6 and New Xbox APU Names Revealed Leaks Hint at Orion Magnus and Canis Chips

Hints about Names Reveal Plans for PlayStation 6 and New Xbox

Some fresh news from big-name leakers has put out the names used for the custom chips (APUs) that will run Sony's PlayStation 6, a fresh PlayStation portable, and Microsoft's next Xbox.

Sony's Upcoming Gadgets Orion and Canis

A leaker named Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID) shared that the PlayStation 6's APU is called 'Orion'. The same person named 'Canis' as the APU for a new PlayStation portable gadget.

Though no other leakers have backed the 'Orion' name for the PS6 yet, a well-known AMD leaker, Kepler L2, made it known that 'Canis' is for sure the APU in the PlayStation handheld. Kepler L2 also said that the 'Canis' APU is built as one whole piece.

New Xbox to Use Magnus Zen 6 APU

The choice of 'Orion' for the PlayStation 6 APU seemed to hint that a leaked AMD Zen 6 APU, called 'Magnus', is set for the upcoming Xbox. MLID gave more info on this 'Magnus' chip:

  • GPU Size It will have a 3nm RDNA "AT2" GPU bit.
  • Core Count The design can hold up to 70 Cores, but it’s thought final models will have 68 Cores.
  • Memory Path It will use a 192-bit memory path, changed from an earlier 384-bit guess.

After this news, AMD leaker Kepler L2 thought that a 192-bit memory path is quite small to run both the CPU and GPU. This might mean Microsoft could pick a split memory style again for its console.

What the New Consoles Can Do

With these early bits of info about the PlayStation 6 and next Xbox, we'll soon turn to see what they can do beyond just being faster. The good work of tools like Sony's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler hints that smart, AI-powered tricks will play a big part in the new console lineup.
