John Romero's Team on Edge as Game Plan Stops
Romero Games, run by John Romero of DOOM fame, is in deep trouble. The firm that was to pay for their new game has said no more money. This move puts the team's future at risk and has forced them to let go a lot of people.
Funding Stopped by Xbox, Says Source
On July 3, news broke that the plan was off, but no one said who the paying partner was. Yet, an artist named Christoph Rendle hinted that it was Xbox. He shared that he lost his job when Microsoft pulled out.
Romero Games said the cut-off was one-sided. They said the game was on time, going well, and had good in-house reviews.
Asking for Help in Tough Times
Now, the team looks for a new partner to help finish the game. "It was a tough day. We’re quite hurt," they shared. "If you know someone or can help our skilled team, reach out."
But, from what folks hear, things look bad. The Journal reports that Romero Games might close soon, with a lot of their staff let go. A past game maker said the halted project was already "very far" along.
Hard to Get New Money
Even with John Romero's famous past, finding new money may be hard. His team’s last games did not do well. Empire of Sin disappointed many and Blackroom never finished. The most liked recent game, SIGIL, was just a set of tweaks for the old DOOM and not a big hit on its own.
