Silicon Motion Shows New SM8466 PCIe Gen6 SSD Chip
At the FMS 2025 Global Flash Memory Summit, Silicon Motion showed off its new SSD chip, the MonTitan SM8466. This chip is made to run top-end business and data center storage things, and fits the new PCIe Gen6.
Main Points of the SM8466 Chip
The SM8466 is from Silicon Motion's MonTitan set, made just for business use. It uses TSMC's 4nm tech and has these key parts:
- Interface Fit: Fits new NVMe 2.0+ and OCP NVMe SSD Spec 2.5 rules.
- Top Size: Lets storage things hold up to 512 TB.
- Safe and Data Keep: Has end-to-end data care, Safe Boot, AES-256 / TCG Opal code, and Check.
- More Uses: Handles SCA link, SR-IOV / MPF split, Namespaces, and S.M.A.R.T check.
Speed Test Gen6 vs. Gen5
The MonTitan SM8466 jumps far in speed from its PCIe Gen5 older, the SM8366. The chip has read speeds up to 28 GB/s and can hit up to 7 million IOPS.
- Tech Node: 4nm (SM8466) vs. 12nm (SM8366)
- Max Size: 512 TB vs. 128 TB
- Straight Speeds: 28 GB/s vs. 14.2 GB/s
- Sudden Speed: 7.0M IOPS vs. 3.5M IOPS
When to Get It and Who It's For
This chip is meant just for the business area. Real storage things with the SM8466 won't be out until 2026-2027, which fits with new data center starts.
For everyday users, the wait will be longer. Silicon Motion says common-level PCIe Gen6 SSDs won't be out before 2030, as the field is still getting used to PCIe Gen5 tech.
