TSMC's 2nm Tech Soon to be Top Money Maker With High AI Need
Taiwan's big chip making firm, TSMC, is setting up for its new 2nm chip tech. They think this will soon bring in most of their money. Even though it's their priciest setup yet, TSMC plans to make a lot more to keep up with big expected need from tech firms.
Map for Making and Size Hopes
TSMC has a bold plan to make its 2nm chips. What the tech world thinks will happen includes:
- Big Making Starts: Second half of 2025.
- First Amount: 40,000 chips each month at the start.
- Big Goal: To make 200,000 chips each month by 2028, more than their 3nm chips.
AI and Big Tech Want a Lot of 2nm
Lots of different tech uses will want 2nm chips, more than 3nm ones. AI work will be a big part, with big buys likely from top names like NVIDIA and AMD. Plus, groups making special chips, like xAI, Google, and Meta, will want a lot too.
High Costs and When They'll Start Using it
The high cost of 2nm is making some buyers wait a bit. Big AI names plan to use the 3nm first:
- NVIDIA: Will likely pick 3nm for its Blackwell Ultra AI stuff.
- AMD: Will use 3nm for its Instinct MI350 AI tools.
The first things with 2nm tech should be NVIDIA's "Rubin" design and AMD's Instinct MI400 range, which will cost more.
TSMC Keeps its Lead
TSMC has grown a lot from the AI boom and looks set to keep its top spot. Even as others like Intel and Samsung make their own plans, TSMC still rules a huge part of the chip market. Their 2nm tech is key for what comes next in tech.
