From CPU Boss to AI Rival: AMD's Big Plan to Take on NVIDIA
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has really changed the game in the server CPU world, and CEO Lisa Su says this win is just the start. She thinks the plan that beat Intel in data centers can do the same to NVIDIA in the AI area.
The Server CPU Game Plan: A Tale of Taking Over
In a chat with WIRED, Lisa Su said that for many big tech firms, "AMD is their main CPU buddy." This isn’t just big talk; real numbers back it up. The part of the data center money they take has jumped to a huge 41.0%, a level hard to think of back in 2017 when they were just a small player.
This fast climb was no fluke. It came from two big things:
- Top Products: The strong work and better power of the EPYC server CPU line won over big names like Microsoft and Amazon.
- Jumping on Chances: AMD kept coming up with new stuff as Intel's Xeon lost its edge, letting them grab a big chunk of the market.
This win gave AMD more than money; it gave them a tested plan and strong ties with the biggest data centers in the world.
Taking the Plan to AI: A Test of Wait and Plan
Now, AMD is eyeing the AI hardware area, where NVIDIA leads. Su gets this, saying clearly, "yes, we plan to be there in AI too. But I’m not rushing."
This waiting game is their main tactic. Instead of a full-on attack, AMD aims to use the trust and key ties it made during its CPU rise. The firms that now depend on AMD for their server CPUs are the ones making big AI setups. By proving their worth as a key CPU partner, AMD has got a way in to talk about AI answers, giving them a key spot in a market hard to get into.
The aim is to go from an "also" in AI to the "main partner," like they did in the CPU space. It's a long plan built on a history of strong wins.
A Real Challenge
AMD's change in the past ten years is awesome. Their path in the server market gives a real map for their big dreams ahead. While taking on NVIDIA's AI rule is a huge task, AMD's proven way of great products and smart partnerships makes them a big player to watch in the coming years.
