AYN Reveals First Look at the Odin 3 Handheld
AYN Technologies has officially kicked off with a first look at the successor of its popular Odin 2 Android gaming handheld-the Odin 3. Initial images and videos show a striking difference in design so as to completely abandon the Odin 2 form factor, thus heavily borrowing from the design of the Odin 2 Portal.
A New Design Direction
The most immediate change for the Odin 3 is its design. Compared to its predecessor, it shares some similarities to the Odin 2 Portal but differs in some significant ways. One key feature of the Odin 3 is its display, which has been designed flat without a slight curve like that of the Portal. It gives the impression that the entire front surface is covered in flat glass with a matte finish.
AYN has also adjusted the control layout. Unlike the ABXY layout on the Portal that was inspired by Xbox, the Odin 3 will adopt a Nintendo Switch-style layout. AYN might also sell aftermarket buttons for those that prefer the Xbox layout.
Key Features and Controls Revealed
Details confirmed from the provided render and teaser video are specific on how:
- Joysticks and D-Pad: The handheld has asymmetrical joysticks and the same D-pad design as the Odin 2 Portal.
- RGB Lighting: The textured thumbsticks are surrounded by RGB ring lights.
- Ports: The bottom of the device houses a microSD card slot, an audio jack, and a USB-C port.
- Audio: The speaker grilles seem to be larger than in past models.
- Back Buttons: Two programmable back buttons on the textured grip.
- Power Button: A side-recessed power button may also serve as a fingerprint scanner.
Under the Hood Snapdragon with Active Cooling
AYN has confirmed that the Odin 3 will run on a Snapdragon processor, though which exact one has not yet been disclosed. It will have a cooling system with an active fan that manages performance, and this will consist of a visible fan, a large air inlet vent placed on the back, and two sets of air outlet vents.
What We Still Don't Know
While this first look is revealing, AYN has not yet disclosed other key specifications like the exact screen size, battery capacity, RAM, or storage options. More information is likely to be released in stages, similar to how the company revealed information about the dual screens of the AYN Thor.
