The Story of Mafia The Old Country A Sicilian Sad Tale

Before Vito Scaletta and Tommy Angelo, Sicily's hard country made the early Mafia. This is the tale of that time, with known codes but new wants. Here is a story of want and chance, set on Enzo Favarro's life.

Chapter 1: From the Sulfur Mines to the Don

Our tale starts with Enzo Favarro, a poor Sicilian boy. In a cold move, his dad sold him for just 100 lire to the bosses of a sulfur mine. Stuck in hard work, Enzo and his pal saved bits, hoping to get out.

In the mine, we find his foe, Damiano Bastone, called "Il Merlo" (The Blackbird). Il Merlo was the main man for the tough Sbarado clan, the Mafia group that ran the mine under Don Sbarado. One day, Il Merlo sent Enzo and his pal into a risky part of the mine to look for lost men, a likely death task due to a feared gas leak. Enzo's pal died, but Enzo lived. Mad, he hit Il Merlo, marking his face for life. This act made Il Merlo's hate for Enzo, now a target.

Enzo ran from the mine with Mafia guys after him. His run took him to country held by a foe group. Just as he was near to get caught, Don Salvo Torrisi, head of the Torrisi group and a big foe of the Sbarado clan, saved him. Since Enzo was on his country, Don Torrisi kept him, not giving him to Il Merlo. This moment changed Enzo's life big.

Chapter 2: A New Home, A Banned Love

Enzo started his new life with the Torrisi group, doing small jobs under Luca, Don Torrisi’s right-hand man. Luca saw good in Enzo’s work and helped him, seeing his young self in the boy. For the first time, Enzo felt part of a family that cared, giving him food, a home, and honor. He gave them his all.

He met two key men: Cesere, the Don's nephew, strong but not sly, and Tino, the family's keen and wary business guy who did not like Enzo.

Enzo learned their main work. Even though their open work was a top winery, their hidden money came from "protection cash"—money forced from local shops. This was their main power. His life turned when he met Isabella, Don Torrisi's girl. They felt a quick pull, as she saw in Enzo what others missed. Their love grew quiet.

Enzo’s name rose big after a horse race in San Celeste. When the Torrisi’s rider was too drunk, Enzo took over and won. This won big regard from Don Torrisi and Luca, and more love from Isabella.

Chapter 3: Turning into a Made Man

As Enzo’s work grew, so did the risks. While on a wine run with Isabella, they met Umbra, Il Merlo’s wild brother. Enzo stood up to him, almost killing him, but Luca stopped things before a big clash.

Enzo then met the Galante group, friends of the Torrisis. There, he met smart young Leo Galante, known for his mind. Enzo's name grew after he stopped some thieves hurting their shops.

His big test came when Baron Fontanella, a big country guy, came to Don Torrisi to fix a wedding. The visit got bad when thieves took the Baron’s son and Isabella. Driven by love, Enzo saved them both. He found out the Baron’s mate, Ludovico, was behind it. By stopping this risk, Enzo showed his true heart. For his acts, Don Torrisi made him a "made man."

Chapter 4: The Sure War

Now a Capo with Luca and Cesere, Enzo's love with Isabella lived on in hidden notes. But, trouble with the Sbarado clan grew. After Enzo and Cesere had to kill Il Merlo’s brother for snitching, a weak peace came.

This peace was fake. Il Merlo worked hidden to set the Baron against the Torrisi group by blaming them for harm. The peace broke at Luca’s kid’s baptism, a day that should have been safe. Il Merlo and his men struck the church, breaking a deep Mafia rule. In the mess, Enzo got Il Merlo at last.

Don Torrisi got ready for a big fight, but went to a peace talk. There, he was tricked. The Baron had sold his country, including the sulfur mine, to Don Sbarado. When Don Torrisi said no, Sbarado’s men jumped them. In the fight, Luca died. With his last words, he told Enzo to leave this life and find freedom.

Chapter 5: The Last Hurt

Enzo was sad, and now Isabella was going to have his baby. They had to run away. He got help from Leo Galante, who set up their trip on a ship to Empire Bay in America. But before they could go, Enzo took one last job from Don Torrisi: to pay back for Luca by getting rid of the Baron and Don Sbarado.

Enzo did it. He took out both men at an opera show and gave power back to the Torrisi family. The Don was so happy, he gave Enzo the rights to the mine where his tale began. But then, Tino, the wary Consigliere, found out about their run plan by hurting the priest Isabella had spoken to. When Enzo and Isabella got to the port, the family set a trap for them.

The Don had Enzo brought up and hit him. Cesere, once Enzo’s close mate, was told to end him. Enzo, though, got away with Cesere, and in one last fight, he let his friend live. The big end was at the mine as a volcano went off. Enzo faced and offed Don Torrisi, who saw Enzo’s big wish for power.

As Enzo was about to fall off a ledge, Cesere helped him up and hugged him like a brother. But then, in a sad twist, Cesere ended Enzo. In the mob world, no tie could block the need for top power. Cesere, now the new Don, took the ship tickets from Enzo’s body. Isabella made it out and took down Tino, saving her future kid. Cesere met her and gave her the tickets. Knowing Enzo was gone, a sad Isabella took the ship to start afresh in America, with her child and Enzo’s last part with her.
