Blood of Dawnwalker Combat System A New Hybrid RPG Approach from The Witcher 3 Developers

After an unfavorable reception to some of the combat sequences shown in the early gameplay demos, the developers of one of the most awaited RPGs, The Blood of Dawnwalker, have shed more light on their grand vision. The team compromised of veterans from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt now intend to set a new standard for the action RPG genre.

A Hybrid of Two Philosophies

Explaining the company's thought process, Game Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who similarly directed The Witcher 3, said the team studied the combat systems in existence and found two prevalent schools of thought:

  • Batman: Arkham. While nice to look at, this is often supported through simple two-button input styles that afford little immersion to the player.
  • In contrast, the second philosophy accounts for For Honor and Kingdom Come. The immersion is very high and tactical, demanding active participation from the players regarding the direction of their attacks and defense. However, their higher difficulty level can be completely off-putting for many other players.

The question Tomaszkiewicz posed became the key question for their design, "What if we create a hybrid of these two approaches."

Two Combat Modes Suited to Different Play Styles

The answer in The Blood of Dawnwalker is to offer players two distinct combat styles:

  • A tactical mode: This is the conventional safely where the question of positioning matters. The hero will not automatically block attacks coming from all directions, thus demanding a higher degree of tact and thoughtfulness in its execution.
  • A simplified mode: For players who don't want to go hardcore. In this, at the right moment, the character turns and blocks an attack coming from whatever side.

Release and Platform Information

Journalists have had some hands-on time with the game at gamescom and initial reviews have started to surface online. Blood of Dawnwalker is set to release in 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
