Qualcomm Formally Announces Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Explains Naming Strategy
Qualcomm has put to rest speculation by officially announcing the name of the next flagship mobile processor Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The company also revealed the date of the chip's launch and reasons for this "hybrid" nomenclature.
Explaining the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Name
In its press note, Qualcomm emphasized that the name seeks to position the new processor clearly in the marketplace. The rationale for the name was described as follows:
- Return of 'Gen' The "Gen 5" part of the name is used to simplify the Snapdragon lineup for consumers so that the generation of the flagship chip is made obvious to them immediately.
- 'Elite' Designation The 'Elite' name conveys a 'new level' of performance, which the company attributes to the development of its advanced Oryon architecture.
- Clear Succession The processor is placed as the official successor to both the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite chips.
Official Unveiling and First Devices
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor will be unveiled during the Snapdragon Summit 2025 event, which will take place from September 23 to 25.
Once the new flagship chip is unveiled, the Xiaomi 17 will likely be one of the first smartphones to come with it.
