Sony Defines Its Use of AI In Game Development Amid Industry Concerns
Sony released a statement on its planned use of artificial intelligence within its entertainment arms, and in that statement, it clarified that AI tools are here to augment, rather than displace, human artists and programmers in the creative process.
Internal AI by Sony The Enterprise LLM
According to a fresh company report, the so-called Enterprise LLM, Sony's internal large language model, has been enjoying wide use. This system is being used by over 50,000 employees in 210 teams to perform tasks in support of entertainment and gaming projects. Sony points to specific uses that directly benefit customers, such as:
- Enhancing the visual quality of select old movies on PlayStation 5.
- For the PSSR upscaling technology in games for PlayStation 5 Pro.
Sony mentioned that it has some safeguards to prevent its AI tools from infringing upon any pre-existing image, music, or art.
Developer Anxiety and Recent Controversies
Yet, artists and developers alike are getting apprehensive about AI's coming role, and in March of 2025, the anxiety escalated with the surfacing of a video showing Aloy, a character in Horizon Forbidden West, talking in an AI-generated voice and matching AI-created facial textures. The video had been promptly pulled down from circulation, yet it incited the literal protests from voice actors and raised the larger question of what the future of character creation in games will be.
Industry-Wide Movement Towards AI
Competitors of Sony too are heavily invested in AI. Microsoft's Project Muse makes use of generative AI for creating gameplay sequences and visuals. After this generated quite a stir, Microsoft had to clarify that the human touch is still integral to their process of making games. This trend running through the industry is what further aggravates the fear of developers, as they feel their importance would be reduced once the AI toolkits reached higher sophistication, particularly since making a PlayStation game is getting more and more expensive by the day.
Present Status of AI Implementation
For now, there is no evidence of Sony downsizing any of its development studios as a direct result of AI. The tug-of-war scenario of production-assisted AI versus job threats continues to be a hotly contested topic within gaming.
