Sony Has Released the IMX927 International Shutter CMOS Sensor providing 105 MP
IMX927 is Sony's newly announced high-performance CMOS sensor, designed for many demanding applications. The sensor sports 105 effective megapixels, really high frame rates up to 113 fps-and finally, a global shutter to destroy motion distortion.

This square sensor has a diagonal of 39.7mm, just slightly smaller than a full-frame sensor. These features might make the sensor applicable for specialized video cameras, though its primary market is industrial and machine vision applications.
- Resolution and Speed: This sensor can provide up to 10,272 × 10,272 pixels resolution (approximately 105 MP). It is also capable of attaining frame rates that reach 113 fps at an 8-bit color depth, or 73 fps with 12-bit.
- Global Shutter: Another of its highly remarkable features is its global shutter which reads all pixels at the same time hence avoids the rolling shutter effect, which is otherwise common for fast-moving subjects.
- Color and Monochrome Variants: The IMX927 has two versions a color standard sensor with a Bayer filter, and a monochrome version "filter-less" for improved light sensitivity.
- Integrated HDR: The sensor also has a built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) function. This feature serves to widen the dynamic range without merging different exposures, thus retaining the maximum usable frame rate.
Compatibility and Sensor Family
The IMX927 uses the same mount as 15 other sensors in its series, thus theoretically allowing upgrades for existing equipment. Moreover, several sensor versions are offered by Sony, which fit different needs:
- IMX937: A 105 MP sensor having a reduction in top frame rate to 56 fps.
- IMX298: A smaller 64 MP sensor but capable of capturing images at higher frame rates - up to 138 fps.
- IMX929: A digital camera sensor that produces data at 51 MP, operating at the highest speed at up to 225 fps.
Installation of the IMX927 sensor in any consumer or professional video camera is not yet confirmed, but the technology that it incorporates is a clear shift forward in the capabilities of sensors.
