Super Mario Galaxy Movie Announced by Nintendo for 2026; Games Setup Re-release on Switch
Nintendo revealed the title of the sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie - The Super Mario Galaxy Movie - in the latest Nintendo Direct. The movie is set to premiere in April 2026, according to the announcement. In another related announcement, Nintendo also confirmed a re-release of the Super Mario Galaxy games on Nintendo Switch in 2025.
Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 Available on Nintendo Switch
To accompany the movie's theme, Nintendo is bringing the classic Wii games to a new generation of hardware. Well, a collection is coming with both Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel on Nintendo Switch from October 2, 2025.
Release Details and New Content
- Feature Compatibility: The games will work with the Nintendo Switch 2.
- Purchase Options: A physical retail version will include both games, while they will be available to purchase separately on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
- Visuals: Since Super Mario Galaxy previously came out in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, significant visual improvements are not expected.
- Bonus Content: There will also be new story pages dedicated to Rosalina in the collection. A physical version of the storybook will be launched in the future but does not include these new pages.
The re-release will especially be remembered because it gives easy access to the otherwise often very highly regarded Super Mario Galaxy 2 platform-agnostic past its native Wii.
What We Know Thus Far About The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The movie title was revealed following a short teaser from Shigeru Miyamoto that journeyed through the Mushroom Kingdom to the sky, then Illumination founder Chris Meledandri added further information.
Returning Cast and What the Story Was Inspired By
The major cast from the first movie has been confirmed for return. They include:
- Chris Pratt as Mario
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach
- Charlie Day as Luigi
- Jack Black as Bowser
- Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
- Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
Meledandri confirmed that the Super Mario Galaxy video games will be the prime inspiration for the storyline of the film. Other cast arrangements or details about new characters were not revealed.
Release Date Information
It remains on schedule for an April 2026 release. However, Nintendo did not mention that the previous date of April 2, 2026, would hold, hinting that there may be some minor shift in the actual premiere day.
