Halo: Combat Evolved Remake in Development from Virtuos, Halo Studios
Rumors have been flying online that a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, an original classic from 2001, is in the works. The project is allegedly co-developed by remaster-happy studio Virtuos in collaboration with Halo Studios.
Co-Development and Engine Details
According to reliable sources on past Halo rumors for YouTube channel Rebs Gaming, the team involved is Abstraction, a Netherlands-based Virtuos studio. That news was quickly corroborated by XboxEra, adding that Halo Studios is taking the lead development reins, meaning the project is very much internally managed and not all the way outsourced.
The rumors also point to a special technical approach that will be used for the remake. There are reports that it will use a hybrid engine system:
- Unreal Engine 5: To be used for the delivery of high-fidelity visuals in this new modern age.
- Modified Blam Engine: A version of this engine used for Halo: Reach will reportedly power core gameplay while managing to re-create the spirit of the original, in addition to permitting some gameplay additions.
This hybrid development style goes in line with other recent Virtuos projects such as their work on Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
Possible Announcement at the Halo World Championship
Fans may not have to hold their breath for a long time before something is disclosed. An announcement or reveal will likely happen at the Halo World Championship on October 24. Such an affair, dedicated to the future of the Halo franchise, would be appropriate for such news.
Status of the Rumors
While the sources are believable, this remains unconfirmed. Especially now that the 25th anniversary will be for Halo: Combat Evolved, the community is overly excited about the remake; however, until Microsoft or Halo Studios gives an official announcement, this should be seen as mere rumor.
