MediaTek Launches the Processor Kompanio 540 to Power Future Chromebooks
Entry-level Chromebooks are ushering in a completely new category of chip from MediaTek. Kompanio 540 is a next-generation processor intended to supersede the Kompanio 528/520 models. It is designed to extend battery life while providing stable performance for basic daily activities and multitasking scenarios.
Core Specs and Performance
The architecture of the Kompanio 540 is based on a "2+6" core structure but features an updated set of cores compared with the previous version. Its promising keys hardware specifications are:
- CPU: This incorporates two performance cores of Cortex-A78 with a speed of 2.6 GHz and six efficiency cores of Cortex-A55, all running at a speed of 2.0 GHz.
- GPU: It's got an inbuilt Mali-G57 MC2 graphics unit.
- Display Support: Has the capability of driving a single display at 4K at 60 fps or two displays at 2.5K simultaneous.
Memory, Storage, and Connectivity
Device manufacturers using the Kompanio 540 will have a flexible option for system settings. This chip additionally supports very wide-ranging modern standards.
- RAM Support: Offers support for both LPDDR5 and LPDDR4x memories.
- Storage Support: Connected to UFS 3.1 or eMMC 5.1 storage.
- Peripheral Interfaces: Includes support for PCIe 2.0, USB 2.0, and USB 3.2 Gen2.
This entry-level SoC will come with a feature that's not often seen in an SoC at this level: full-wireless capability through the latest Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 standards.
Availability
The first Chromebooks powered by the MediaTek Kompanio 540 processor will be available for purchase starting January 2026.
