New PS5 Digital Edition with Reduced-Down-to-825GB-Storage Quietly Launched in US and UK

Sony extended availability of a new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (model CFI-2100) to cover more markets: the USA and the UK. The new version of the console has been supplied with 825GB of internal storage instead of its predecessor's 1TB.

Same Price, Less Storage

With less storage, the company decided to retain the price of the new 825GB PS5 Digital Edition. It is sold for $499 on the PlayStation Direct US website and for £429.99 in the UK. The old 1TB model is listed as unavailable for online purchase from Sony's official store.

Yet some third-party retailers, including Amazon, continue to sell the original PS5 Digital Edition at a price of $499 in the US, allowing consumers to score a better deal while stock lasts.

Other Options for PlayStation 5

The new 825GB digital model is one of several consoles purchasable under the PS5 brand. Other options for direct purchase from Sony include:

  • PS5 Pro: This features 2TB of storage and retails for $749 / £699.99.
  • PS5 with Disc Drive: This is a standard model with a disc drive; it sells for $549 / £479.99.
  • Certified Refurbished PS5 (Fat Model): This is an older model with a disc drive and 825GB of storage and is available at $399 / £389.

A special PlayStation 5 Digital Edition 30th Anniversary Limited Edition bundle is on sale in the UK for £469.99.

Physical and Internal Changes on the New Model

Apart from the storage cut, the new CFI-2100 has several other modifications; for example, the console is now painted all matte externally, even including the central black strip, and is lighter in weight than the 1TB version. Internally, a hardware teardown has evidenced changes in a thinner steel plate over the motherboard, fewer Voltage Regulator Modules (VRMs), and more NAND modules.
