AMD B850 Motherboards Dominate Market Rapidly Declining Prices
2025 has been another important year for AMD followers, because it released Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and the motherboard market matured. In the spotlight now is the AMD B850 chipset, which has surfaced as an effective competitor in balancing performance and affordability. New data confirms the B850 hurries to catch up with its status as the builder's chipset of choice; only less than a year since its market debut, it already shakes up the dynamics market.
Skyrocketing Market Share
According to the latest issues of the Danawa Research sales data, the best way to describe the trace of the B850 chipset has been nothing short of phenomenal. From the 2.29% market share at the time of their launch, it climbed to 28.8% by October, as opposed to the previous-gen B650, which is still the champ with 37.64% share but has lost ground from over 52%. Following this trend, the B850 seems likely to replace its predecessor as even the standard of AM5 builds by 2026.
Price Drops Drive Adoption
A critical aspect of enabling such a change is direct affordability. Since launch, B850 motherboards have lost a substantial 21% in ASP, with the current average around 263,285 KRW. Although still higher than the matured B650 platform, the narrow price gap-with B850 having much better features-has made this an increasing proposition for value-for-money. Consumers vote with their cash, choosing the new technology that offers them better longevity.
Changing Form Factor and Storage
B850 is also changing the type of boards that users are buying. In fact, unlike the B650 generation, where more than 91% were Micro-ATX boards, the B850 generation has adopted the good old ATX form factor. About 21.46% of all B850 sales can now be attributed to ATX boards, suggesting that override priorities for mainstream users include expandability and high-end features along with value.
Demand for storage is being redefined by the number of specifications set for motherboards. Modern games often require massive installation sizes; therefore, there is a realistic demand for more high-speed drives. With this in mind, more than 63% of B850 motherboards come with three or more M.2 slots-an upgrade from the dual slot configuration common in the B650 generation. The inclination is just as appropriate in the trend that sees persons shifting from HDDs to all-SSD setups for gaming.
The Battleground of the Manufacturer
Competition among motherboard manufacturers is quite tough in the B850 era:
- ASUS: The undisputed leader in the field with around 40% market share, mainly through its popular TUF series.
- MSI: A firm second position at 28.8% but gaining towards potential market opportunities.
- ASRock: Possibly the biggest surprise, ASRock has surged from under 5% to nearly 20% of the market, no doubt helped by aggressive pricing and success of its value-oriented Challenger series.
- GIGABYTE: After a warm first reception, it has slumped to a recent share of around 14.33%.
With full support for PCIe 5.0 and robust PBO capabilities, the B850 chipset is successfully replacing the B650 as the new standard, injecting fresh energy into the AMD ecosystem.
