Renesas Unveils Gen 3 DDR5 MRDIMM Chipset with speeds up to 16000 MTs

Renesas Electronics has announced its Gen 3 DDR5 MRDIMM chipset to boost server memory speeds. The new hardware delivers data transfer rates up to 16,000 MTs for artificial intelligence data centers and cloud platforms. However, mass production for the new silicon is not scheduled to begin until late next year.

As artificial intelligence models grow larger, server architectures need higher memory bandwidth without requiring completely new designs. The Gen 3 chipset solves this by offering 25% more bandwidth than current Gen 2 options while remaining compatible with existing DDR5 server motherboards. This allows operators to extract more performance from their infrastructure without facing disruptive changes. The platform includes a multiplexed registered clock driver, a multiplexed data buffer, power management chips, and temperature sensors.

Renesas added several enhancements to this iteration to improve system visibility and control. A new self training mode called DESTM allows engineers to fine tune timing and receiver equalization to maximize stable margins. AMD vice president Amit Goel welcomed the release, stating that innovations in memory form factors are important for improving bandwidth and platform scalability. The company designed the silicon to balance these performance gains with thermal constraints, helping keep power consumption under control.

Select partners and major DRAM manufacturers are already receiving early samples of the RRG5013x and RRG5103x chips. Renesas plans to showcase the hardware at the upcoming Future of Memory and Storage Conference in California next week. While early testing is underway, broad market availability is slated for the second half of next year. Interested buyers can find complete documentation on the official Renesas website.
