Instantly Sold Out $4000 ROG Matrix Platinum RTX 5090 Announced by Asus

Asus has now launched what it calls a "halo" product, the ROG Matrix Platinum RTX 5090, with a staggering price tag of $4,000. With its price about 50% higher than the standard $2,800 RTX 5090 models, the card sold out. Limited to just 1,000 pieces, the card was made scarce almost immediately.

Extreme Power Requirements The Card Must Perform

The Matrix 5090 is not your ordinary plug-and-play component. To get the full benefits and reach the 800W power limit, the card requires a certain arrangement. The users must have a high-end Asus motherboard with a BTF graphics card power slot. The route of power delivery does allow for both BTF connector and the 12V-2x6 connector, but the use of both of them is necessary to feed the card maximally.

Performance Benefits and Cooling Engineering

German overclocker and YouTuber der8auer tested the card and confirmed the claims of Asus about a gain of about 10% in performance off standard models when 800W limitation is enabled. A 10% gain seems a little trivial to some relative to the markup, but at GPU extremes of performance, it is quite a leap indeed.

The cooling solution is weighty

  • Weight and Size The assembly has a weight of 3.2 kg (7.1 lbs) and dimensions of 370 x 150 x 77 mm.
  • Fan Configuration Monster heatsink and four fans in 3+1.
  • Thermal Interface Liquid metal used for the heat transfer. Nonetheless, der8auer mentioned that it would require an area barrier for a possible leak.

Safety Features for a Heavyweight Card

Considering the weight and large size of the Matrix 5090, GPU sag is a real cause of concern. Asus has countered this with the inclusion of an angle sensor in the card. This safety feature monitors the card's physical orientation, hence providing the necessary protection for such an investment costing several thousand dollars.
