Horizon Steel Frontiers MMORPG Officially Announced for PC and Mobile
G-Star 2025 has been the venue for the official announcement of Horizon Steel Frontiers, a full-blown MMORPG set in the universe of Guerrilla Games' iconic franchise. The game being developed for personal computers (using NCSOFT's PURPLE platform), on the one hand, and mobile devices, iOS, and Android, on the other.
In a Shared World of Cooperation and Competition
According to Guerrilla Games studio head Jan-Bart van Beek, this project will be Horizon's world for everybody to play "anywhere and at any time." The game will provide a mix of cooperation and competition to invigorate the environment with player drive.
"You're sharing the frontier with thousands of other players, sometimes working together to take down machines, other times competing with rival tribes or fighting over resources," van Beek elucidated. "That mix of cooperation and competition creates moments that you could never script."
Transitioning Horizon's Combat into an MMORPG
Executive Producer Lee Sung-Gu from NCSOFT explained how the iconic combat of the franchise is being altered for a multiplayer setting. Heavy emphasis is thereby put on strategic, cooperative monster-hunting of gigantic machines.
Key combat mechanics include the following:
- When part of the machine is killed, you can quickly ascend with your Pullcaster.
- Place your traps on the busted part for a status effect or something.
- Weapons looted from fallen machines will need to be taken aboard the player's mount to be utilized for subsequent fights.
Lee said that "players must take on their roles, act strategically, and work together seamlessly," further stating that these mechanics are designed to "shine in large-scale battles, offering the scale and dynamism that only an MMORPG can provide."
Discovering the New Region The Deadlands
Horizon Steel Frontiers will take place in a new area of the post-apocalyptic United States called the Deadlands. This environment's landscape takes inspiration from the real-world locations of New Mexico and Arizona.
