Samsung partners with NVIDIA to create its AI Grand Factory, embedding AI in manufacturing with digital twins and Omniverse.
Samsung Builds AI Grand Factory with NVIDIA to Revolutionize Manufacturing and Develop HBM4 Memory

AI Grand factory Background

The main objective is to embed AI in every nook and cranny of Samsung's manufacturing flow. It hopes to create "a single intelligent network where AI continuously analyzes, predicts, and optimizes production environments in real time."

Eventually, for-grade implementations of AI technology will be pursued at the corresponding scale in this AI factory employing NVIDIA accelerated computing and digital twin manufacturing together with libraries from NVIDIA Omniverse. Digital twins are virtual replicas of processes that enable companies to monitor and analyze operations without impacting the real world. These virtual environments will be employed by Samsung to detect anomalies, predict maintenance, and optimize production prior to any changes on their real-world fabrication plants. These plans intend to satisfy the development of AI factory infrastructure along Samsung's entire manufacturing front by stretching its application to Samsung's global manufacturing sites, especially the Taylor manufacturing site in the US.

Other Major Fields of Collaboration

Besides the AI factory, there are several other major technology areas in collaboration between the two organizations:

  • HBM4 Memory: The companies are jointly working on HBM4, which uses Samsung's 6th generation, 10nm class DRAM and a 4nm logic base die to achieve speeds of up to 11Gbps.
  • Electronic Design Automation (EDA): Samsung's computational lithography has made a 20x performance gain with NVIDIA's cuLitho and CUDA-X libraries in its process for optical proximity correction (OPC). They are also collaborating with EDA partners to develop next-generation design technologies for integrated circuits.
  • Custom AI Models: Samsung is building its own custom AI models with NVIDIA accelerated computing and the Megatron framework for large language models (LLMs).
  • Intelligent Robotics: Through the NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition and NVIDIA Jetson Thor robotic platforms, the partnership extends into robotics.
  • AI-RAN Technology: Samsung, together with NVIDIA, telecom operators, and research institutions, is developing AI-RAN. This next-generation communication technology applies AI to cellular radio access networks to enhance performance and efficiency.
