Vectrex Retro Console Remake Finds Huge Success on Kickstarter
The modern-day remake of the retro console Vectrex from the '80s is a success as far as crowdfunding goes. The project is named Vectrex Mini, where it achieved its funding goal just 15 minutes after the launch of its Kickstarter campaign; it has since raised more than $749,000, far beyond the start-out request of $126,577.
Modernization of a Classic Design
The project is being spearheaded by David Ogia from France, who wishes to rejuvenate the classic console with up-to-date technology. The original Vectrex was a rare beast in that it was endowed with an independent 9" CRT vector display similar to an oscilloscope.
The new Vectrex Mini will possess several key upgrades:
- Display: 5-inch OLED instead of CRT
- Form Factor: Remains true to the original aesthetic but in a smaller size
- Connectivity: Bluetooth for controllers; HDMI port for external displays; memory card slot
Gaming Experience and Software
The console will ship with a starter pack of games that were originally released for the Vectrex. To mimic the retro feel, it will also include a set of filters intended to simulate the look of the original CRT display on its new OLED screen.
Pre-Order and Release Information
Incredible success on Kickstarter guaranteed the funds for mass production. The Vectrex Mini is now available for pre-order in Europe, with prices starting from €149. Units are set to be shipped to backers in September 2026.
