Anbernic RG477V Early Reviews Emerge Before Launch
The Anbernic RG477V is coming out on December 20, but it's already getting the early reviews that can talk about what this retro gaming handheld can do. An initial review from the Retro Game Corps YouTube channel does a heavy spotlight into the device's construction, performance, and emulation capabilities.
Build Quality and Design
It stated that rg477v is probably the best vertical handheld constructed by anbernic. Also, among vertical handhelds, it is the largest vertical handheld-size, comparable with others like the Retroid Pocket Classic, Ayaneo Pocket DMG. This size is taken up by that larger display, and as for a handheld weighing 339 grams, one could easily confirm it is comfortable to hold for longer periods. The controls are praised during gameplay, although the dead zones seem quite large and square-shaped around the joysticks.
Performance and Thermal Fix
The device once got to a very high temperature of up to 105 °C while running in performance mode-an initial issue. Anbernic was informed and then put the problem into an over-the-air (OTA) update, which reportedly solved the difficulty. Post-update reports cite the handheld's performance to be very similar to that of the Ayaneo Pocket DMG, a device that costs less than half as much.
Emulation and GPU Limitation
The 4:3 RG477V display is excellent for emulating systems such as PS1, GameCube, and SEGA Dreamcast. However, games running on systems with the 3:2 aspect ratio-in particular the Game Boy Advance-will have some black bars added.
It can emulate GameCube and PS2 at up to 2.25x resolution; however, the review pointed out the downfalls related to the Mali GPU found on its MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor. For example, certain graphics did not render using the Vulkan API in `Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour` and required utilization of OpenGL, giving the feeling that switching between the two APIs would further give the best experience for users.
It also causes problems running some Nintendo Switch and PC games (via Gamehub). A specific complaint found the controls unresponsive on the Android version of Diablo Immortal, but otherwise, works with all other Android titles.
