ASRock Launches RX 9070 XT Taichi White GPU with Conflicting Specifications

ASRock is on display with a top-end board, Radeon RX 9070 XT Taichi White 16 GB OC. While the card introduces a number of new features, including a multipurpose LCD screen, its promotional material specifies a 384-bit memory bus, a technically impossible specification with the stated memory limitation of 16 GB.

New Features and Design

This "White" edition is an upgraded version of the existing black Taichi model, designed for builds with a white theme.

  • Aesthetic: The card is fully clothed in white, including a white PCB and white heatsink shroud.
  • Multipurpose LCD Screen: Found on the side of the card, the LCD screen is a major addition to the graphics card. It is able to show real-time system information, such as GPU temperature and screen resolution, or display a clock, weather forecast, photos, and animations.
  • Cooling and Lighting: It is equipped with the Taichi 3X Cooling System, and its fans are embellished with RGB lighting, as is the case with the regular black edition.

Unpacking the 384-bit Memory Bus Discrepancy

The first sore point of confusion is actually the advertised memory interface of the card. The promotional video displays a 384-bit memory bus with 16 GB of VRAM, but this configuration with micron GDDR6 technology is simply impossible, requiring currently non-existing 1.33 GB VRAM chips.

Upon further investigation, when viewing the PCB of the card, one can note the placements of 8 VRAM chips. The expectation here is that 8x 2 GB GDDR6 chips would compose the 16 GB, operating across a 256-bit memory interface (8 chips x 32-bit). Thus, it comes with near certainty that the specification showing 384 bits was indeed a post-production error.

Expected Specifications

Aside from the marketing error, the core specifications of the GPU are expected to remain more or less in line with the existing black Taichi OC edition of the RX 9070 XT. This likely includes a boost clock speed of about 3100 MHz, although the official product page remains unavailable to confirm any of these details.
