Assassin's Creed Shadows Cuts Plans for a Second Story Expansion

Ubisoft has basically clarified the post-launch roadmap for Assassin's Creed Shadows, which implies that the game will receive far less in the way of narrative content than the earlier entries. According to Assistant Game Director Simon Lemaitre-Comtois, there will not be any second story expansion, leaving the story expansion Claws of Avaji as the only narrative downloadable content.

Post-Launch Plans Scaled Back

A second season or expansion beyond Claws of Avaji are thus not currently in the plan, according to Lemaitre-Comtois. The development team intends to reschedule content delivery on first-year data; still, future updates are going to be made short and sharp. Players will see content that trickles in and will also have certain big updates that break up the gameplay, but big narrative deliveries are totally off the table.

Rationale Behind the Decision

The developer attributed the change in strategy to production constraints and changes in the scheduling. It was reported that the production for Shadows had started rather late, and the decision to change the release date forced quite a big modification of the initial seasonal subscription scheme. Lemaitre-Comtois mentioned that the team had to adapt to new technologies, which led to the need for an accelerated production process and chose a more grounded approach instead of an expensive route with an extensive multi-DLC roadmap.

In Comparison With Valhalla and Odyssey

This is a program somewhere out on the other side of the spectrum in terms of support, compared with the previous installments. In the case of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, three major story expansions were released, including, of course, the most colossal Dawn of Ragnarök. Odyssey received two. A solitary expansion for Shadows might, therefore, indicate that the title is not doing as well in terms of player retention as its predecessors and so would not warrant a return on investment for large-scale story expansions.
