Meta AI Power Strategy Includes Space Based Solar To Ensure Data Centers Never Run Dry

Meta Pursues Orbital Solar and Multi Day Storage While Using Nuclear and Geothermal Assets to Solve AI Energy Constraints and Data Center Power Needs

The global competition for artificial intelligence development has compelled IT companies to develop energy sources which exceed existing terrestrial energy capabilities. Meta established two partnerships which will enable the company to create stable power systems which use wind and solar energy as their power sources. The company established a partnership with Overview Energy and Noon Energy to create a reliable clean energy system which will sustain continuous power needs for data center operations.

Nat Sahlstrom Vice President of Energy and Sustainability at Meta claims that current clean energy facilities provide insufficient power capacity to support continuous AI operation requirements. Solar power depends on daylight while wind requires specific weather conditions. To bridge this gap Meta invests into new technologies which provide continuous power generation from orbit and long duration storage which exceeds multiple hours.

The new strategy includes an ambitious component which involves space based sunlight harvesting. Overview Energy operates its satellites at geosynchronous orbit which lies about twenty two thousand miles from the equator. The satellites operate in a location which provides them with uninterrupted access to sunlight because there are no nighttime breaks or cloud interruptions. The technology transmits energy to Earth through near infrared light which existing solar farms on the ground can capture.

This method enables existing solar facilities to generate nighttime electricity without needing extra land or new grid systems. Marc Berte Chief Executive Officer of Overview Energy explained that the space based solution optimizes the energy output which can be produced by existing infrastructure. Meta has established a capacity reservation which permits them to access one gigawatt of power from this orbit to grid system as part of their first space based energy commitment at this magnitude. A pilot demonstration will occur in 2028 while full commercial operations will begin in 2030.

Our satellites sit in orbit where sunlight is constant, collecting energy and beaming it to ground based solar facilities as low intensity near infrared light. This means solar farms can keep producing electricity around the clock.

The power system requires dependable energy sources which can provide electricity during times when electric generation rates drop. The storage systems which exist today depend on lithium ion technology which allows power discharge for less than three hours. Meta established a partnership with Noon Energy to introduce ultra long duration storage systems which will supply electricity for more than one hundred hours. The system combines modular reversible solid oxide fuel cells with carbon based storage medium to create a buffer system which provides the grid with enhanced protection.

The partnership includes a storage capacity reservation which consists of one gigawatt of power and one hundred gigawatt hours of storage. The initial stage of this partnership will begin with a twenty five megawatt pilot project which the company plans to finish by 2028. The modular design of the storage system enables users to increase storage capacity whenever they need to expand their data center operations. The energy grid will maintain stability during times when renewable energy production decreases for several days.

The recent contracts establish new business relationships which support the long term energy strategy that Meta has developed during multiple years. The company has already secured contracts to purchase more than thirty gigawatts of renewable energy which include extensive funding for geothermal and nuclear power projects. The company collaborates with Sage Geosystems and XGS Energy to develop next generation geothermal power solutions while establishing major nuclear power agreements with TerraPower and Oklo and Constellation Energy.

The diverse portfolio exists to enhance the American energy grid while providing consistent electrical power to AI infrastructure. Meta supports emerging technologies which enable businesses to turn their current projects into operational systems which will become reality by the decade's end. The upcoming 2028 milestones for space based solar and carbon based storage will act as the primary demonstration for the upcoming phase of industrial energy management.
