CATL, the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries, is proceeding with plans for the large-scale adoption of sodium-ion batteries. The company has confirmed that the new batteries are set to enter the market by the end of 2026.

Official Announcement and Applications

The timetable for the launch was officially stated at a CATL supplier conference on December 28, 2025. The company specified that these sodium-ion batteries are for various applications, including:

  • Passenger electric vehicles.
  • Commercial electric vehicles.
  • Battery swapping systems.
  • Energy storage systems.

'Naxtra' Battery specifications

In April, CATL unveiled its "Naxtra" brand for its sodium-ion battery technology. Key performance indicators for these batteries include:

  • Energy Density: Up to 175kWh/kg
  • Operating Temperature: Wide range from -40-+70°C
  • Vehicle Range: Capable of providing over 500km

Catl's Position in the Market

The announcement comes as CATL is continuing to lead the global automotive battery market. As of October 2025, the company held a 38.1% share in its close-following competitors being BYD with a 16.9% share and LG Energy Solution, 9.3%.
