Galaxy Z TriFold Durability Test Exhibits Major Compromises

According to tech blogger Zach Nelson, the durability test of the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold has revealed that this device's unusual design compromises protection and integrity. The available evidence suggests that they need to be extremely careful with the device.

Screen and Body Durability Tests

In its materials and construction, the device raised concerns from top to bottom.

  • Main Display Film: The unremovable protective film on the main screen was too soft and could easily be damaged with a fingernail.
  • Folding Procedure: There is a proper folding sequence enforced by the device. On-screen warnings will appear, while the device vibrates if the user tries to fold the section with the cameras first.
  • External Display: The outer screen performed to a standard level, exhibiting initial scratches at level six on the Mohs hardness scale.
  • Frame and Back Panels: The making of the frame is aluminum, whereas the back panels are made of a fiberglass material that is difficult to break but marks easily.

Hinge Performance and Bend Testing Result

The mechanism was very complex and subjected to stress tests alongside the structure, which failed.

  • Dust Resistance: After sprinkling sand on the main display, a distinct crunching sound was heard when operating both hinges.
  • Structural Integrity: The bending and fracture tests confirmed that Galaxy Z TriFold lacks structural rigidity.

Internal Teardown Reveals Design Flaws

An internal disassembly gave some insights into the device's vulnerabilities.

  • Dual Batteries: The device has two batteries, one underneath each rear panel. Although it does have pull tabs, the thinness of the tabs does allow them to bend when being removed.
  • Internal Contamination: After the display was removed, sand from the previous test was found inside of the hinges, demonstrating that dust can easily enter.

Nelson stated that due to durability issues, the Galaxy Z TriFold requires careful handling to prevent a shortened lifespan.
