Realme Marketing Head Envisions Death of Cheap Smartphones as Costs Rise
Consumers should brace themselves for an increase in smartphone prices in the near future. Francis Wong, Realme's head of marketing, has gone on record to say that stagnation in the memory market and component shortages is affecting these price adjustments across the industry. As per Wong, the increase in costs is already affecting manufacturers, with a tremendous escalation anticipated from 2026 onward.
Component Shortages Driving Prices Up
The supply chain is the real culprit, DRAM and NAND chips being the bottlenecks. The memory components have become too costly, making it compulsory for the companies to adjust pricing for the end devices. The PC market is usually affected first when such things happen, and now the smartphone market is facing an unavoidable increase in pricing.
Realme P4X Last Value King
Wong pinpointed this generation of phones and the one upcoming as the last chance for consumers to grab high-performance devices at low-end prices. He notably referred to the Realme P4X just announced as an example of this dying breed.
The Realme P4X is a beast in terms of specs, with an entry price of $179 approximate
- Processor MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultra
- Display 144Hz refresh rate
- Battery Massive 7,000 mAh capacity
Wong declared on social media that the P4X is the last benchmark for extreme performance & pricing, urging buyers to catch the last value king before the tide turns.
Industry Wide Consensus
Realme is not the sole manufacturer to signal such changes. Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi, has also frequently warned about unavoidable price hikes. Overall, senior executives have agreed that future generations of smartphones will find it almost impossible to match the price-performance ratio that currently exists in the market.
