SO-DIMM Adapters Rise in Popularity for Desktop Use
The growing price discrepancies among the various classes of desktop and laptop memory modules have caused a surge in the popularity of SO-DIMM to DIMM adapters. Reports from the European market indicate that more and more people are getting these adapters to fit cheaper laptop-style memory into normal desktop computers.
The Prime Reason Unequal Price Increases
The major life factor behind the trend is this difference between the two memories as far as price inflation is concerned. While their laptop SO-DIMM modules accumulated price increase by an average of 136 percent, desktop DIMM modules raised their prices as high as 245 percent.
It makes building or upgrading one's pc with an adapter and laptop memory extremely affordable.
Cost Comparison Example
For example, compare the cost savings between a so-called 'standard' 16GB DDR5-4800 module with:
- The price for an SO-DIMM (laptop) module stands at about €100 all over Europe.
- An adapter will cost anything between €8 and €18.
- All these add up to a rough total of €108 to €118.
- As opposed to that, a likewise DIMM (desktop) module goes for almost about €146.
Performance Consideration
Such a side effect, however, is not without benefits; there is also the fact that, in this way, it also brings some disadvantage. Users of this option should be informed that there might be some compromise in the performance levels. The use of adapted SO-DIMM modules inside the desktop brings higher timings in memory and generally lower performance than when standard DIMM components are used.
