The Closure of Anthem Servers Triggers Emotional Player Farewell
The servers of BioWare's online action game, Anthem, have finally been shut down for good. Its finality has quite unexpectedly elicited all kinds of positive and nostalgic farewells from players, which are in stark contrast to the criticisms that greeted the project at its launch.
Players Remember the Lost Potential and Happy Memories
Several users made their final moments in the game public on social media platform X focusing on what they consider the strongest components of it.
"I started the last mission of Anthem, and within seconds had an entire team assembled. It's nice to see that others are also saying farewell to this game too. I enjoyed it, and it's frankly sad that it never saw a second life."
"I still grieve the immense potential that this game and the universe itself held. It could have been an epic single-player narrative or even a Mass Effect spin-off. Such a waste of a fantastic world and flying mechanics."
"To be frank, I am somewhat gloomy; I threw down hundreds of hours into that game. The fly, the fight, the narrative, and the world were phenomenal... I'll see you in the skies, Rejects."
Annoyance and Rebuke from Some Members of the Community
While most goodbyes were nostalgic, some players vented their frustrations at the fate of the game and the intervention of other parties usually said to have caused its demise.
"Rest in peace, anthem. A game unlikely to be loved or even appreciated. Thanks to everyone who lied about it and put up ignorant, inciting reviews. And to all those who didn't even play it. You are the reason why it is gone"
A Remembrance of Troubled History of Anthem
Anthem was envisioned as a session-based game with an RPG treatment and an ongoing service format by BioWare. At launch, the game was choked with negative feedback due to a crater of boring mission design along with content that was found lacking, notwithstanding its flying-centric basic mechanics that received some praise. EA, the project's publisher, even pledged a major revamp under the name Anthem 2.0. However, the strategy was ultimately scrapped, leaving no support behind and eventually leading to server closure.
