BYD Overtakes Tesla as World Most-Electric Vehicle Company
So it is finally official, and BYD has become the largest electric vehicle manufacturing company in the world, having overtaken Tesla in 2025. The final tally of sales shows that the margin separating the two companies is broader than most analysts had predicted.
Result of Sales in 2025 A Certainty
Reports indicate that the sales numbers for all-electric vehicles (BEVs) for the full year of 2025 are as follows:
- BYD: 2,254,714 BEVs sold (+27.9% YoY)
- Tesla: 1,636,129 BEVs sold (down about 9% compared to 2024)
This means that BYD sold over 600,000 more all-electric vehicles than Tesla during this period.

BYD's Growth Factors
More importantly, BYD sold 4,550,036 vehicles in 2025. While nearly half these sales were fully electric models (49.6%), its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) segment accounted for 50.4% of sales. BYD's hybrid, therefore, has been declining at 7.9%, indicating a consumer push toward fully electric vehicles.
A significant growth factor for BYD remains its performance abroad. For the very first time, the company surpassed 1 million vehicle sales internationally, a whopping 150% increase year-on-year.
Tesla's Trials in the Market
Conversely, in 2025, Tesla dealt with a variety of challenges for growth. While demand was lifted by the updated Model 3 and Model Y, limited availability of models and missing entry-market price points were blamed for the hindered growth.
