MSI Explores the New GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z Graphics Card
The company has confirmed manufacturing of the flagship RTX 5090 Lightning Z; this represents the comeback of the Lightning brand. The GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z will be the new high-performance graphics card with a state-of-the-art liquid cooling setup and a one-of-a-kind display integrated into the unit.
Core Design and Hardware Specifications
The RTX 5090 Lightning Z will boast numerous high-end hardware features:
- Cooling System: Closed-circuit All-In-One (AIO) liquid cooler with an enormous 360mm radiator; utilizes full copper cold plate touching directly with GPU, VRAM, and VRMs.
- Power Delivery: Two 12V-2x6 power connectors, 40-phase VRM over a reinforced PCB, rated for 800W standard OC mode and 1000W Extreme Mode.
- Integrated Display: It has an 8-inch display on the front surface of the card's shroud.
- Construction: It holds a 2.5-slot design and uses a carbon fiber backplate to provide structural integrity. Dimensions are 260 x 151 x 61 mm.
- Remote Management: The supported app will allow monitoring and overclocking via the phone.
Performance and Overclocking Capabilities
The Lightning Z is all about performance, so much so that while it has a stock boost clock of 2730 MHz (2775 MHz in Extreme Mode), the real focus lies in its overclocking potential.
- Extreme Overclocking Results: Overclockers have already taken the GPU core with liquid nitrogen (LN2) as the cooling method to 3742 MHz-the highest on the record for an RTX 5090. The memory modules have been validated under these conditions at 36 Gbps speeds.
- XOC VBIOS: For the purposes of record-breaking, MSI has prepared an XOC (Extreme Overclocking) VBIOS that permits the card to draw as much as 2500W for power. The warranty is voided when using this BIOS.
- PSU Recommendation: For standard operation in its higher power modes, MSI recommends a power supply of 1600W or greater.
Availability and Production
It has been confirmed by MSI that the RTX 5090 Lightning Z will be a limited edition. There will be a total of 1300 units ever produced through its lifetime. MSI has confirmed that pricing will be premium, the official price, and a confirmed date of availability will be disclosed later.
