BioShock Movie Gore Verbinski Details for the Cancelled Rapture Film Adaptation and Netflix Project News

Gore Verbinski reveals psychological themes and R rated designs for his cancelled BioShock film adaptation of the Rapture universe and Big Daddies.

Gore Verbinski Shares Vision for His Cancelled BioShock Film

The film industry presently produces video game adaptations as standard movies but the ambitious projects from the 2000s all failed to enter production. The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy brought Gore Verbinski fame and he later explained his unproduced BioShock sci fi shooter project.

During a recent Q&A session Verbinski explained his and John Logan's approach to the Universal project by describing their need to create better bigger things. The director intended to stay true to the game's mature themes by using an R rating to show the following elements

  • Psychological Themes Verbinski planned to investigate Oedipal themes present in the story.
  • Lore Integration The movie would reveal how the Little Sisters originated and show the protagonist's decisions made their historical impacts.
  • Multiple Endings The script included two possible endings which demonstrated the game's choice based system.
  • Visual Aesthetic Pre production developed complete drawings of Big Daddies together with Rapture's unique underwater Art Deco design elements.

Verbinski expressed his enthusiasm to create the complete project by stating he wanted to wow audiences with his visual and narrative designs about the project.

The franchise continues its cinematic journey through other projects after Verbinski's original film version was stopped in pre production. Netflix is currently developing its own BioShock adaptation with director Francis Lawrence at the helm. Lawrence will begin his project after finishing The Hunger Games Sunrise on the Reaping.

Hollywood's persistent desire to adapt Rapture's complex universe into films receives confirmation through Verbinski's original vision which evolved into Netflix's current project.
