NVIDIA Confirms Continued Support for SHIELD TV After 10 Years
NVIDIA has confirmed its commitment to the SHIELD TV platform, which celebrated a decade of official support in 2025. The device which launched in 2015 became the first Android based hardware to receive official support for a period that surpassed all other Android based devices. The company maintains its update policy by delivering both updates and security patches to all products which include its oldest models.
Andrew Bell who serves as NVIDIA Senior Vice President describes the SHIELD project as his passionate work for the company which develops actual products. The device changed its operating systems through two major upgrades which began with Android 5.0 and ended with Android 11.
The period between 2023 and 2024 saw a significant halt in all system updates. The technical teams spent their time on security system development because they needed to resolve the network security problem that existed in the Tegra X1 system. The organization achieved important technical achievements during the period of system shutdown which extended from 2023 until 2024.
NVIDIA developed a complete new Digital Rights Management system during an 18 month period through which they constructed the entire system from its basic elements. The new Digital Rights Management system which NVIDIA created after 18 months of development work. The new system provides 2015 and 2017 models with total access to all 4K streaming content which requires protection. The update enables older devices to meet current streaming standards so they can continue operating until their scheduled replacement date.
The SHIELD TV 2019 model continues to enter production as a current product. The device showed strong sales patterns which stayed stable throughout multiple years. The company is conducting research on next generation technology even though it has not yet revealed plans for a new device model. Companies are examining these potential specification requirements for a future SHIELD device.
The AV1 video codec will function natively through this system. The system will use HDR10+ as its standard display technology. The system will support future Dolby Vision profile updates through its existing system interface. NVIDIA creates hardware devices which remain functional for more than five years through its commitment to ongoing software development work.
