LG Discontinues 8K TV Production Across OLED and LCD Lines
LG Display has officially announced that it is stopping the production of 8K televisions. The entire 8K product line of the company will be affected by this decision which includes both premium quality OLED TVs and regular LCD TVs. The LG Z3 released in the previous year marks the final 8K OLED television from the company which will not have any new models until 2026.
With this move, LG exits a market where it was the last major manufacturer offering 8K OLED panels at scale. Sony and TCL have already discontinued their 8K production while Hisense has no current plans to manufacture 8K products. Samsung has reduced its 8K product range to one high end model while it will showcase 4K QD OLED technology and RGB backlighting as its main attraction at CES 2026.
The industry shift away from 8K is driven by several practical challenges that made the technology difficult to sell to average consumers
- Visual Diminishing Returns The human eye cannot differentiate between 4K and 8K resolution on screens which are 65 inches or smaller.
- Manufacturers pay twice the costs of 4K to produce 8K panels along with their accompanying processing equipment.
- 8K displays require additional electricity because their pixel arrays operate at higher power levels while needing more thermal management systems to control heat.
LG stopped using the technology because there is no complete native 8K content available to them. Streaming platforms currently restrict their content to 4K resolution while Blu ray discs continue to use 4K as their maximum output. The lack of upcoming movies shows or games which would require extra pixels makes 8K hardware support a lesser priority for development.
LG will track market developments to determine potential future technological interest based on rising consumer demand and enhanced content availability. The company has shifted its focus from technology research to improving the performance of 4K displays at this time.
