Reanimal Review The Spiritual Successor We Were Waiting For
The announcement from Tarsier Studios about their departure from the Little Nightmares franchise caused fans to experience legitimate concern. The development of Little Nightmares 3 moved to another team which resulted in Tarsier Studios starting their work on Reanimal. The campaign demonstrates itself as an extended sequel to their earlier creations because it presents a refined terrifying experience that shows Tarsier's command over the creepy little kids wandering through nightmares style of storytelling.
Reanimal expands its original concepts into a larger more bizarre and darker experience. The journey becomes worthwhile for both solo players and those who choose to play with friends although it brings certain common annoyances.
The premise is simple yet effective you play as a brother and sister one with a sack on his head the other in a broken bunny mask stranded on a terrifying version of their island home. The players must traverse this hellscape to find their lost companions. The game presents adorable character designs, but the world they traverse turns into a complete contrast. The title uses horror elements which create a sadder atmosphere that leads to dread more effectively than the jumpscare approach found in competing games.
The game's best element shows through its atmospheric presence. The visual display uses multiple shades of gray which face up against intense red colors that create a demonic effect. The camera work shows an ambitious style which frequently moves through windows while showing the audience their small size when facing the huge grotesque environments. The art direction creates an unsettling experience through its depiction of both abandoned cinemas and flooded hotels.
Players who have experienced Limbo, Inside, or Little Nightmares already understand the game mechanics. Players need to run and hide while solving environmental puzzles and performing light platforming tasks. Reanimal introduces multiple enhancements which improve the gameplay experience.
- Coop Integration The game enables players to experience solo play with a highly capable AI or team up with another player through both local couch coop and online multiplayer. The introduction of a Friend Pass system creates a major advantage because it allows two players to play online with only one person needing to purchase the game.
- The Boat The game introduces a boat mechanic which allows players to explore new areas of the game world. The game achieves a greater sense of magnitude through its sailing system which enables players to travel between various locations despite having a linear gameplay structure.
- Combat The combat system provides players with more lenient combat requirements when compared to the system used in Little Nightmares 2. The game experience now feels smoother for players, although some enemy encounters (like the repetitive seagull creatures) don't present deep complexity. Players can now approach enemy encounters more easily because missing a swing no longer results in instant death.
- Metroidvanialite Elements Reanimal differs from past linear games by enabling players to move back to previously explored sections. Players must find specific tools (like pliers) which become available later to unlock locked gates. Players who explore can find collectible masks and lore secrets.
Reanimal uses voice lines to tell its story, even though Tarsier usually relies on environmental storytelling to deliver its narrative. The minimalist approach presents brief bits of environmental chatter which establish the world while maintaining fast pacing since it doesn't need lengthy cutscenes. The heavy use of allegory throughout the narrative leads to more questions than answers until the story reaches its climactic twist moment.
The game uses effective pacing to transition between crouchwalking stealth sections and highenergy chase sequences which require running sliding and jumping to reach safety. The arrival of the ending feels unexpected because the buildup to that moment creates uneven pacing.
The game maintains a polished appearance yet it has multiple fundamental problems which affect the genre. The trial and error gameplay mechanics create an experience which becomes repetitively tedious for players. Players have to deal with multiple death sequences because the game does not make clear which path to follow. The coop experience becomes disrupted because players must endure multiple deaths which destroy their gaming flow. Missing a jump or failing a stealth check results in a disastrous situation which forces players to return to the last checkpoint. Players can deal with most checkpoints although they will encounter frustration when they tackle vague puzzles or precise chase sequences.
The game demonstrates solid technical performance. Unreal Engine 5 enables the game to display highquality graphics through its exceptional lighting and texture capabilities. The game experienced very few bugs while the AI partner who assists players in singleplayer mode showed excellent performance by never becoming stuck and never causing unfair character deaths. The game delivers an experience which lasts between 4 to 6 hours and maintains appropriate timing because it ends before becoming boring despite the expensive launch price which some players will perceive as excessive for its cost.
pros
- Atmosphere The combination of art direction and sound design and camera work produces an atmosphere which creates a unique experience of terror.
- Friend Pass and Couch Coop The multiplayer system offers two highly economical options which benefit all players.
- Improved AI and Combat The current Tarsier title has smoother gameplay operations compared to its earlier Tarsier games.
- Story Intrigue The story develops through a dark narrative which uses few yet powerful dialogue moments to create an unexpected plot development.
- Visuals The artwork creates beautiful visual effects through its use of spatial dimensions and light elements and its design of terrifying monsters.
cons
- Trial and Error The game contains stealth and chase sequences which force players to repeat the same tasks over and over again.
- Vague Direction The game sometimes fails to provide clear instructions for the next objective which results in players losing their progress pace.
- No Dropin/Dropout The multiplayer system requires players to follow strict rules about saving progress which limits their ability to join and leave the game.
- Repetitive Enemies The game features multiple enemy types which appear in different sections of the game.
Tarsier developed a game which acts as a proper continuation of the traditional horror genre which the studio initially established as its signature style.
