Samsung Galaxy S26 DRAM Strategy Micron and Samsung DS Split Initial Supply

Samsung Electronics has confirmed its memory supply chain framework for Galaxy S26 series production. The Mobile Experience (MX) division obtained LPDDR5X DRAM through equal order distribution which allocated 50% to Samsung Device Solutions division and 50% to Micron. The approach was implemented to address the worldwide shortage of standard memory components.

The S26 DRAM structure introduces a new design which replaces the previous Galaxy S25 series framework. Micron delivered all DRAM requirements during the S25 launch period because their production output and product quality exceeded expectations. The quality of Samsung DS improved which caused a shift in distribution between Samsung internal division and external partners to 60/40. The two suppliers are now delivering LPDDR5X memory to the S26 project while using their 1b manufacturing process.

Samsung MX has obtained all necessary inventory yet the company struggles to maintain profitability because memory component prices have risen sharply. The current market environment enables both DS division and Micron to impose higher pricing demands.

  • Internal Negotiations: Samsung DS has shifted to a quarterly contract system to maximize profit, recently doubling (100% increase) the price of LPDDR5X supplied to Apple for the iPhone 17.
  • Micron's Position: Micron is also seeking significant price increases, leveraging limited production capacity and high demand from other clients.
  • Cost Offsetting: Samsung will recover its expenses by raising retail prices for Galaxy S26 products and using Exynos 2600 application processors in 30% of its devices.

The initial batch of DRAM for the Galaxy S26 will feature a 15% increase in productivity over the previous generation. The MX division decided to postpone using Micron's 1gamma (1c) process because they believed it was too early for mass application. The team is implementing an enhanced circuit line width which improves the LPDDR5X design used in the S25 product.

Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy S26 series at the Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event. The timeline for the project in development consists of these planned dates.

  • Unpacked Event: february 25, 2026 in San Francisco.
  • Korea Pre orders: From february 26 until March 4, 2026.
  • Official Launch: March 10, 2026.

Negotiations are ongoing for the memory supply mix which extends beyond the initial batch and will establish price points for upcoming quarterly contracts.
