Apple and Samsung The 2026 Foldable Pricing Conflict
The foldable smartphone industry will undergo a major transformation during the second half of 2026 when Apple introduces its first foldable iPhone. The data shows Apple has increased its first production goals from 8 million units to almost 15 million units which represents a 20 percent increase. The company plans to sell products at $2000 while aiming to achieve high sales volume which will directly compete with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 for market leadership.
The initial estimates showed that the foldable iPhone would cost $2400 premium. Current supply chain developments have led Apple to set its target price at $2000. Apple will eliminate the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (256GB model) price barrier through its existing hardware ecosystem and high volume component orders.
Samsung faces financial challenges because of chipflation which causes mobile application processor (AP) prices to rise. AP solutions now account for about 30 percent of total production costs. The company experienced a 26 percent increase in chip procurement costs which resulted in higher prices for Galaxy S26 and mid range products. Samsung plans to maintain its current prices for 8th generation foldable devices because it wants to compete against Apple.
The margin for foldable devices depends on both their hinge mechanism and their flexible display in contrast to regular smartphones which have no such dependency. Samsung has been able to reduce some semiconductor costs because it expanded its supply chain into new areas.
- Supplier Competition The installation of Chinese companies like Huanli and the end of domestic hinge supplier control have lowered component costs by approximately 30% to 40%.
- Hardware Optimization The company uses mid to long term contracts to stabilize expenses for its specialized foldable components.
- Component Specialization The market price of foldable parts has decreased at a rate which allows Z Fold 8 to maintain total price freeze options because standard AP prices have increased.
Samsung executives led by DX Division President Roh Tae moon have made the decision to focus on hardware optimization as their way to control rising expenses. The Apple entry into the foldable category will confirm its existence while expanding market potential yet it will create an exceptional challenge for Samsung to maintain 8th generation product excellence. Samsung will decide between price freezes to maintain market share or per unit profit maximization during the next months.
