Sony launches PS5 Pro system software update for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution PSSR AI upscaling technology to enhance image quality in games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Monster Hunter Wilds starting March 16 2026
Sony has introduced improved PSSR AI upscaling technology which will function on PS5 Pro devices. Sony Interactive Entertainment will launch its major PS5 system software update on March 16, 2026 to deliver the new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology. The newest version of Sony's artificial intelligence upscaling system improves image quality by enhancing picture clarity and eliminating motion distortion. The developments from Project Amethyst which AMD and Sony built will ultimately be integrated into FSR technology for universal industry implementation.
The PPR library undergoes an update which uses advanced neural network technology for better frame analysis results. The PS5 Pro game library benefits from three specific visual enhancements:
- Temporal Stability: The system provides greater temporal stability through improved methods to eliminate flickering and shimmering problems.
- Stochastic Sampling: The process delivers enhanced image reconstruction capabilities which maintain detail quality achievement through performance function delivery.
- Motion Clarity: The system provides fast visual transition detection which reduces afterimage and ghosting effects during intense gameplay sessions.
The PS5 Pro system enables users to activate PSSR enhancements for all compatible games through console settings.
The majority of leading developers have already implemented AI upscaling support through their game patches. The improvements include the following notable changes:
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: The game now shows better character detail because all natural hair restoration processes have been improved with image stabilization.
- Monster Hunter Wilds & Dragon’s Dogma 2: Capcom has integrated the update to refine clarity and stability across these expansive open world environments.
- Silent Hill f & Silent Hill 2: Konami has improved fog rendering and grass animation for their 1960s Japan environmental effects.
- Alan Wake 2 & Control: Remedy Entertainment decided to use the update which enhanced upscaling quality and improved light changes for dark high contrast areas.
- Nioh 3 & Rise of the Ronin: Team Ninja uses sharper object rendering techniques to enhance tree and plant visuals in their combat action games.
- Senua’s Saga Hellblade II: Ninja Theory demonstrated how their particle effects deliver better visual quality while maintaining the cinematic style of the game.
The new PSSR system will begin its staged release today. Users can check for the update manually in the PS5 Pro system settings if it has not yet appeared automatically.
- The PS5 Pro will get its first system software update on March 16 2026.
- The system software update will be available to all PS5 Pro users starting on March 16 2026.
- The game Crimson Desert will release on March 19 2026 with full support for its advanced PSSR technology.
- The following weeks will bring dedicated patches for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 to establish these visual improvements.
BioWare and Square Enix technical directors stated that the new PSSR system achieves better adjustment between Fidelity and Performance modes. AI technology needs to use pixel reconstruction methods because it enables games to reach higher frame rates while delivering image quality which matches native 4K resolution standards. The PS5 Pro will use enhanced PSSR technology as a standard feature for all upcoming first party and major third party PS5 Pro games according to Sony.
