Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Pro Technical Expansion Delivers PSSR AI Upscaling and Enhanced Ray Tracing Performance to Night City on April 8
Night City Overhauled Cyberpunk 2077 Prepares for PS5 Pro Expansion. CD Projekt Red has announced a major technical upgrade for Cyberpunk 2077 which will be released on April 8. The studio's Vice President and Global Art Director Kuba Knapik explained in an official briefing that the developers used the PlayStation 5 Pro's extended computing capabilities to enhance the game's visual elements. The free update intends to make the console experience of Night City match the studio's initial design objectives for the area.
The main element of this upgrade uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology which is called PSSR. The studio claims that its AI based technology which processes images from the game at each individual pixel results in better visual quality for the game's complex environments. The upscaling implementation is intended to make the game’s various assets more detailed from the elegant weapon textures to the shining surfaces of top tier vehicles.
The game uses lighting as one of its main visual elements and the update adds support for BVH8 which enables better ray traced shadows and reflections and ambient occlusion effects. Knapik explained that the changes create a more realistic experience between dusk and dark periods. The developers seek to achieve better neon light rendering by enhancing the system's ability to display bright neon signs that shape the game's ambiance.
The update provides users with three different operational profiles to match their individual preferences. The Ray Tracing Pro mode enables complete lighting enhancements for visual experience while maintaining performance at 40 frames per second on displays that support variable refresh rate. The Performance mode enables users to maximize their gameplay experience through frame rates which reach 90 frames per second on compatible displays. The developers created a Ray Tracing mode which provides users with partial lighting improvements while maintaining a constant frame rate of 60 frames per second.
All PlayStation 5 Pro owners will gain access to the technical expansion on April 8. The studio expects that this update will attract both returning players and new players to Night City because Cyberpunk 2077 remains accessible through PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium members.
