Zach Cregger Transforms Raccoon City Outbreak Into Fresh Resident Evil Movie Vision Starring Austin Abrams As New Protagonist Bryan
Zach Cregger is developing an original movie which will present a fresh vision for the Resident Evil world. Cregger is known for his work on Barbarian and Weapons, but he is going to create a new story which does not involve established characters, including Leon Kennedy. The film shows a new main character who must deal with chaos because the virus outbreak has started. The filmmaker shared his preference for exploring game elements which exist outside established franchise boundaries during an interview on the PlayStation Blog.
I would rather just celebrate everything I love about the games by telling the story that could exist on the sidelines of one of the games.
The plot introduces a courier named Bryan, portrayed by Austin Abrams, who finds himself trapped in the city during the collapse of order. Cregger presents the character as an average player character who must manage mutant danger despite his lack of formal fighting abilities. The film uses this point of view to show how tension builds through both resource management and slow movement, which matches the game mechanics of 1990s survival horror titles.
Cregger explained to Polygon that his project vision showed strong ties to the progression systems which operated within the source material. The audience will follow the character development path which begins with basic tools and progresses to advanced equipment. The filmmakers created this film experience by using inventory tension and ammunition shortage to create a different viewing experience from previous films which focused on arcade action sequences.
The director also highlighted the importance of environmental storytelling. He believes the setting must act as a character itself, constantly evolving as the protagonist moves from one dangerous location to the next. Cregger uses the second game of the series as his base while he rewrites the specific events to show how horror builds during a citys final moments.
The movie contains numerous elements which longtime viewers will recognize despite its original story. Cregger experienced strong emotional reactions because of the Village entrys terrifying doll house sequence, which he described as his most frightening moment of the series. He will use practical effects and atmospheric tension to create psychological intensity which exceeds standard zombie film experiences. Cregger and Shay Hatten wrote the film, which was produced through a partnership between Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions.
The director views the project as a personal project which he dedicated to his most memorable horror film series from his childhood. He expressed a high level of sensitivity toward the expectations of the fan base, choosing to avoid a direct adaptation of the games out of respect for how well the interactive versions already tell those stories. The film will make its theatrical debut on September 18, which will mark an important turning point for the franchise as it begins its new artistic phase.
