Activision Confirms 2026 Call of Duty Will Skip PS4 Console

Call of Duty 2026 Discontinues Legacy Console Support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to Advance Technology for Project Helix and Modern Warfare 4 Development

Activision will discontinue all support for legacy consoles for its upcoming 2026 Call of Duty game. The publisher announced through a statement on social media that the upcoming Call of Duty game will not support the PlayStation 4. The franchise will not use any Gen 8 hardware for its upcoming release which marks the first time since 2013 that it will completely avoid this hardware generation. The series maintained cross generational compatibility for 13 years but 2026 will mark the first time it stops supporting consoles which were released in 2013.

The official Call of Duty account on X directly addressed recent digital rumors that suggested the game was undergoing playtesting on older Sony hardware. The company dismissed these claims as false, ensuring that the development focus remains strictly on current generation platforms. The transition began after Black Ops 7 completed its run as the last title for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The discontinuation of support for hardware that has been around for 13 years will enable Infinity Ward to achieve crucial technological advancements because they can stop using outdated memory and processing power.

The technical shift coincides with major internal changes at BioWare and the broader Xbox division under the leadership of CEO Asha Sharma. Microsoft has recently revised its subscription model, confirming that the 2026 Call of Duty entry will not be available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on its launch day. The company experienced a challenging fiscal year because Black Ops 7 achieved its lowest United States sales when it ranked 5th in the charts, which marked the series worst performance since World at War released in 2008. During that same period, rival title Battlefield 6 outperformed the franchise in several key markets, prompting a return to a premium sales focus for the 2026 project.

Insider reports indicate that the cancellation of previous generation game versions reached its final decision point during the last months of the previous year. The developers are now using engine redesigns to address the visual overload problems which have affected their recent games. The evidence shows that development for the 2026 game currently proceeds with optimization work for the next Xbox console which Microsoft has code named Project Helix. The new platform will operate with advanced AI technologies which AMD developed together with Microsoft to improve performance through dedicated silicon design.

The release date for Modern Warfare 4 has been established as October 2026. Microsoft must continue to deliver the series to Nintendo platforms until its 10 year legal requirement ends, yet there has been no official announcement about the presence of the 2026 game on the Nintendo Switch 2 console. Existing players must now upgrade their hardware to join the upcoming military shooter cycle according to the announcement. The move highlights a broader industry trend where major publishers are finally abandoning the 2013 console era to meet the demands of modern software engineering.
