Path of Exile 2 Return of the Ancients Update 0.5.0 Delivers Massive Endgame Content New Ascendancy Classes and Atlas System Redesign Launching May 29 2026

The final major update for Path of Exile 2 called Return of the Ancients will be released on May 29 2026. Grinding Gear Games has confirmed that Path of Exile 2 version 0.5.0 titled Return of the Ancients will launch on May 29 2026. The expansion delivers its last major content update before the game reaches its 1.0 version after ExileCon in November. The developer reveal explains that the patch delivers more than 50 hours of endgame content which offers veterans an organized narrative experience. Timothy Augustin reported that the update removes random drop friction by transforming key farming into dedicated questlines for all major bosses.

The update introduces 2 new ascendancy classes which will expand the build options for the Huntress and the Monk. The Huntress uses animal spirits with the Stag for stampede maneuvers and the Owl for projectile empowerment through the Spirit Walker ability. This specialization grants players a unique ability to permanently tame one specific beast boss to use as their companion. The Martial Artist monk specialization uses Spiritual Energy for spectral illusions while the player must use multiple techniques to perform combat skills. Players can use the Way of the Stonefist to transform runic tattoos and spectral bells into physical weapons which create multiple ways to fight in melee combat.

The Return of the Ancients expansion introduces a complete redesign of the entire Atlas system. The core progression area has changed into The Fortress which acts as a precursor stronghold that players discover after finding the first tower. Players can now unlock all Atlas tree nodes after completing map activities in the Fortress because the tree now contains 300 total nodes. The new system enables players to choose several different mechanics without needing to frequently redo their character builds. The game introduces 5 new endgame storylines which players can follow by completing their objectives that include revisions of Delirium Breach Ritual and Expedition systems.

Ezomyte Runesmithing introduces its league mechanic through its new character Farrow who will teach players this crafting system. Players will discover ancient remnants which contain 8 slots for runes that enable the creation of customized weapons. The system requires players to choose between risk and reward because the runes used for crafting also enhance the elemental powers of nearby undead enemies. The league introduces Runic Ward which functions as a secondary life system. The new Kalguuran skills operate independent of class and do not need specific mana or socket color requirements to function.

The Genesis Tree expansion supplies players with deep jewelry crafting capabilities which expand through player resource contributions. For those who want to optimize their endgame performance the update introduces 100 new crafting runes and more than 40 special items. The addition of the Raven Flock aura creates an area around the player which deals increasing area of effect damage. Grinding Gear Games has implemented community requests by providing players the ability to reforge unique weapons which have low level requirements into items suitable for high level content through the Mystic Refuge.

The update dedicates most of its resources toward making the user experience better through its 0.5.0 update. The native in game build guide system now allows players to use .build files which let them bring in both passive trees and gem suggestions from community creators. The Atlas map now includes a live search function which allows users to check market prices through shift alt click commands. The campaign introduces navigational landmarks and environmental storytelling to help players navigate through challenging areas.

Production priorities have also required the Act 2 Dreadnought mission to become simpler because developers have combined its multiple maps into one to enhance the speed of campaign replays. The Return of the Ancients expansion provides players with an ultimate endgame experience through its 15 new bosses which include 4 pinnacle fights and its 300 new Atlas tree nodes. Players can access the new systems when the update goes live in late May.
