Sega Ceasing Production Of High Profile Super Game Project To Avoid Financial Ruin And Focusing On Full Retail Games And Classic Franchises
Sega has confirmed that it is ceasing production of its high profile Super Game project. At a recent quarterly financial presentation to its investors Sega revealed that the online service development was ended to avoid more financial ruin to the company. This decision comes amid an internal policy overhall where Sega are phasing out their free to play titles to instead focus their resources on full retail video games. The game that was stopped had been in active development since 2021 the publisher confirmed.
Sega have already put a tremendous amount of money into the project as they have already invested $882,000,000 in to the project and this prompted management to completely overhaul the company policy of online services and to focus on producing standalone games based on the studios strengths. This signals the end of their venture into trying to develop one huge ecosystem that many Sega games would exist under.
Though Super Game is no longer in development the publisher has revealed they still aim to revisit their classic IP's after releasing last year a modern entry to the 80s and 90s classic side scrolling series with Shinobi Art of Vengeance. Aside from this modern reinvention of the classic the publisher is working on modern entries for many of their classic franchises including Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe and Virtua Fighter, although specific launch windows for none of the titles have yet been revealed.
