Sony Settles PlayStation Store Class Action Lawsuit for 7.8 Million Dollars to Resolve Five Year Legal Battle Over Platform Software Distribution
The legal dispute between Sony and PlayStation Store customers has been settled through a 7.8 million dollar deal. Sony Corporation has agreed to a preliminary settlement to pay 7.8 million dollars to resolve a class action lawsuit involving the PlayStation Store. The United States District Court for the Northern District of California recorded the legal dispute which started five years ago. The court approved the proposal after a long running negotiation period.
Sony will distribute the compensation through credits added to the virtual wallets of the affected accounts. The method enables distribution of 7.8 million dollars while maintaining platform financial support for users who participated in the collective claim.
The plaintiffs expected a much higher settlement amount than what they received. The legal team representing the gamers originally sought a payout of 7.9 billion dollars. The 7.8 million dollar agreement represents a massive reduction in the potential liability for Sony as the company moves to close the case.
The court will complete its final examination of the settlement in October. The court will initiate payment to eligible parties after it issues final approval of the case which will take effect after the five year litigation period. Digital marketplaces face ongoing examination through this case which investigates the rules controlling software distribution on closed hardware platforms.
