SanDisk Releases Official 8TB PlayStation 5 Expansion Drive Optimus GX Pro 850P with High Price Tag and Fast SSD Speeds
SanDisk Releases Official 8TB PlayStation 5 Expansion Drive Price Will Surprise YouSanDisk unveiled its latest addition to the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro storage ecosystem, an officially licensed 8TB internal solid state drive (SSD) named Optimus GX Pro 850P. Power users needing to hoard their digital game collections will appreciate the storage capacity, though it will cost you more than two of Sony's flagship consoles. Optimized for both PS5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro, this drive boasts impressive speeds and reliability.
SanDisk's official 8TB storage solution for the PlayStation consoles was tested in laboratory environments and achieved sequential read speeds up to 7,200 MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 6,600 MB/s. In terms of durability, the Optimus GX Pro 850P is rated at 4,800 Terabytes Written (TBW) for endurance and includes a custom heatsink designed by SanDisk specifically to avoid thermal throttling. It comes with a 5 year limited factory warranty and works with PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.
At $2,960, this high capacity, high performance storage upgrade would also buy you more than two new standard PlayStation 5 consoles (currently retail for around $499) directly from Sony or several digital storefronts like Best Buy, Target, and GameStop. SanDisk’s outrageously priced 8TB expansion drive elicited the usual Internet fueled backlash and humorous take.
“$2,960 for an 8TB SSD for your PS5 2 new PS5’s + a Ps vita (yes they make those) or that Yikes The era of $1000 dollar storage for consoles has arrived.”
In a Twitter post featuring an image of the drive, user @GameOver Greg expressed concern regarding the cost. Other users were even more imaginative, with the thread discussing what the money could have purchased instead, ranging from two or more PS5s and plenty of games, to cars and luxury goods.
