Assassin's Creed Shadows final update introduces Black Tides narrative epilogue and Domains endgame challenge system with rewards leading to Black Flag Resynced
The final significant content update has been released for Assassin's Creed Shadows, adding a narrative epilogue to the game and a long requested endgame challenges system. It is available as a free update, serving as both the story conclusion and also creating a narrative thread leading into next year's Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.
The primary new addition is the Black Tides story update, an expansion of roughly 2 hours bringing the stories of Naoe and Yasuke to a conclusion. Players will have to complete the main game along with previous post launch quests A Critical Encounter and A Puzzlement to unlock the mission. The update centres around the confrontation with the Black Cross; a rank within the Templar Order of elite adversaries. Associate Game Director Simon explained that the mission is in response to community requests to expand on the lore.
"Black Tides, which is our final story mission for Naoe and Yasuke, is how we kick that door wide open and add more Templar focused story content to wrap things up."
The episode also includes Horizon, the 3rd and final Modern Day Rift, linking the Shadows meta narrative to Black Flag Resynced's location and context. Additionally, 2 new cross title Projects have been added to the Animus Hub. Completing these challenges will earn players legacy items before the release of the next game, including Captain Edward Kenway's iconic pirate outfit.
Players who want to focus on building a strong character with a potent set of equipment can now utilize the highly replayable endgame challenge system, known as Domains. This new mode is unlocked on one of the mountains in the Yamato region of the game world. It requires a character level of 30 or above. The Domains game mode features 5 different arenas, each themed around unique environmental characteristics and with varying combat requirements.
The 5 maps are Broken Sky, Megalithic Domain, Blood Moon, Shipbreaker, and White Out. Unlike a typical combat challenge, the environments contain a series of increasingly detrimental, stacking gameplay modifiers that prevent players from utilizing their optimal configurations time after time. Simon elaborated on the design intent behind the new game mode.
"With Domains, we are freshening things up by introducing gameplay modifiers that stack on top of each other to nullify some of the more overused player strategies and make sure there is plenty of replayability."
The development team emphasized that the topography, verticality, and ambience of each arena will determine whether a stealthier, or combat focused, approach from either Naoe or Yasuke would be most appropriate respectively. Completing a Domain yields high tier weapon loot and unique cosmetic hideout rewards unavailable for purchase on the digital store.
Shadows development also informed other active projects at Ubisoft. It was noted by the development team that the improved parkour and movement mechanics created for Shadows were transferred directly to the Singapore studio, in order to assist with optimizing the movement systems and physics engine of Black Flag Resynced. The latest update is available to download for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC and Mac platforms.
