Capcom has quietly begun early development on a new remake of the original Resident Evil. According to prominent industry insider Dusk Golem, the project has been in active pre production since late 2025. However, full production will likely wait until the current development crunch on the Resident Evil Code Veronica remake concludes.
This upcoming release represents a complete reimagining of the 1996 classic rather than a simple remaster of the 2002 GameCube version. Capcom wants a modern camera. The project will adopt the over the shoulder perspective seen in the modern remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. This completely replaces the fixed camera angles of the 2002 version, which many younger players find difficult to use.
Financial data easily justifies this decision. The modern remake of Resident Evil 4 has surpassed 10 million copies sold, while Resident Evil 2 has crossed 15 million units. Some purists argue that the older remake is already perfect and does not need a replacement. Others are eager to see the entire franchise unified under a single modern gameplay standard.
Capcom has a packed pipeline for its horror franchise. The team is currently pushing through a demanding development phase for the Resident Evil Code Veronica remake. Once that workload eases, resources will transfer to the new project. Fans will likely have to wait for an official announcement until the current projects are closer to completion.
