Intel Announces Major Expansion at Leixlip Campus in Ireland

Intel has announced a €5,000,000,000 ($5,700,000,000) capital investment at its manufacturing campus in Leixlip, Ireland. This massive financial commitment is aimed at growing manufacturing capacity for advanced silicon, specifically targeting the production of Intel Xeon 6 and next generation Intel Xeon processors built on the Intel 3 process node. The expansion will utilize existing cleanroom space, increase overall production output, and support ongoing research and development activities at the site.

According to Naga Chandrasekaran, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Intel Foundry, this funding is designed to modernize existing fabrication facilities with highly advanced manufacturing tools. Chandrasekaran highlighted the importance of the expansion for the company's manufacturing ecosystem.

This €5 billion investment represents a definitive commitment to maximize capacity at our Leixlip campus and increase what we can deliver to Intel Foundry customers. By investing in our existing fabs with state of the art technology and installing cutting edge tools, we are ensuring that Ireland remains at the forefront of the world's most advanced manufacturing ecosystems.

The facility upgrades involve the installation of advanced manufacturing equipment and the expansion of the automated track system. This infrastructure enhancement is designed to integrate separate campus modules into a single, high velocity production line, optimizing the movement of silicon wafers through the fabrication process. The execution of the construction and equipment installation phase is already underway, engaging specialized construction trades and creating permanent high tech positions at the facility.

Since establishing its Irish operations in 1989, Intel has invested more than €30,000,000,000 in the region. The Leixlip site currently employs 4,900 workers, making it a critical driver of the local economy and a prominent technology hub in Europe. An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, welcomed the news, describing the expansion as a major endorsement of the regional workforce.

Intel's latest multi billion euro investment in Leixlip is a powerful vote of confidence in Ireland, our skills base and our position at the heart of Europe's most advanced manufacturing ecosystem. At a time of rapid technological change and global competition, this expansion strengthens Ireland's role in securing resilient semiconductor supply chains.

The expansion also aligns with the broader semiconductor strategy of the European Union, contributing directly to regional tech sovereignty goals by securing a localized supply of cutting edge processors. IDA Ireland Chief Executive Officer Michael Lohan emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, noting that the project reinforces the regional leadership in semiconductor manufacturing while supporting global supply chain resilience. The investment ensures that the Leixlip campus remains one of the most technologically advanced facilities in the global semiconductor landscape.
