Netflix Partners with 21 Laps Entertainment for Persona Live Action Adaptation Lead by Showrunner Christopher Monfette
The surge in popularity of video game screen adaptations shows no signs of slowing down as Netflix enters the early development stages of a live action television series based on the popular Persona franchise. Reports from Variety and entertainment industry sources reveal that the streaming service has begun working with 21 Laps Entertainment, the production studio behind Stranger Things, and Story Kitchen, a company that specializes in adapting gaming intellectual properties for television and film.
Christopher Monfette has been brought on board to lead the writing team and act as the showrunner for the series. In addition to his role as showrunner, Monfette, who previously worked on Star Trek Picard, will serve as one of the executive producers for the adaptation. While Netflix has not yet commented officially on whether the series is actively being developed, casting calls and release schedule details have not been announced. Furthermore, the production team has not confirmed which specific game from the Persona series will serve as the basis for the storyline.
While the Persona gaming franchise has previously seen multiple anime adaptations, this upcoming project will mark the first live action adaptation in the history of the brand. This format follows the current content strategy at Netflix of expanding its library of gaming adaptations. The streaming service has already successfully created a number of high profile gaming projects, both animated and live action, based on properties such as Castlevania, Devil May Cry, and Cyberpunk. A target launch window has not been set by the studio as the project remains in the earliest stages of writing.
